Favel Denmark!

Our short Danish experience has come to an end… here’s the thingsĀ that will stick with usĀ the most.

The good

  • The cycle paths. They are everywhere, in towns, cities and rural areas, and they make travelling by bike safe and easy
  • The nature camps. It was really nice to be able to camp without great hordes of people or excessive infrastructure, and they were often really well laid out. And did I mention they are also free?
  • The chilled out atmosphere. We really felt like we were on holiday here, with people travelling slowly, clean air and beach atmosphere
  • The cities. We really liked both Aarhus and Copenhagen, and they are clean, interesting and really easy to get around in. The lack of cars really changes how a city looks and feels.
  • The people. Everyone seems happy, and the Danes are really helpful (they also all seem to speak very good English).

The bad

It was hard to find anything specifically bad about Denmark, but there are few things which travellers may want to be aware of.

  • Water was harder to find than we expected. There isn’t a lot of publicly available taps and most nature camps don’t have water. It was nothing drastic, just something we had to be continually conscious off.
  • The scenery is a little unchanging. Denmark is very flat, so you you don’t get a lot of wow factor (it’s plenty scenic despite this).
  • Outside of the major cities, food is a little bland (although supermarkets are well stocked).

The surprising

  • How much we liked the hot dogs. The good ones come with raw onion, crispy fried shallots, pickles and an assortment of sauces.
  • How few people are around outside of the peak school holiday season. We often found ourselves the only people on a beach, and we mostly had the nature camps to ourselves.
