The princess and the pea

Along with the cycling infrastructure, Denmark’s train system continues to amaze us, and leaving Copenhagen by train was just as easy as cycling into it. We managed to buy tickets for us and our bicycles from an automated teller, get the bikes to the right platform, and onto the bike carriage on the train (where there are points to tie our bikes to so they don’t move) all without any hassle (or having to ask for directions). The only slight hiccup was working out which carriage on the train had the bike compartment (a lovely lady came to our rescue and pointed us to the end of the train). Two easy hours later we were in Nykøbing Falster, and on our way to our last nature camp in Denmark.

The campsite itself was a little disappointing, a small grass plot off a dirt road near an inlet, with a table and big piles of dirt (we were confused at first, but have come to the conclusion that they might be trying to build up the campsite so it doesn’t bog up when it rains). Despite the less than ideal location, we decided to stay as it gave us time for some much needed bicycle maintenance (note to selves – avoid taking bikes on sand at all costs!!!!). DSCN0930It turned out to not be so bad when we saw an absolutely beautiful sunset over the water, that lit up the wheat fields around us with a gorgeous soft glow.

DSCN0933The next morning (our last in Denmark) we woke with sun on our tent, and a cloudless sky. Matt was groaning about not sleeping very well due to the large rock under his mattress, telling me how he had to sleep wedged up against the tent to try and avoid it. We got up to make a cup of tea, and as I was getting out of the tent I knelt on something huge under his mattress. I stuck my hand under just to check what it was and pulled out his water bottle. I’m not sure whether Matt wanted to laugh or cry.
