Rush hour in Copenhagen

Typical Copenhagen street, post rush hour

It’s Monday morning in Copenhagen and as I wandered out to get my morning pastry I was struck by how few cars were on the roads. Instead of cars there are bicycles. Lots of bicycles. On each side of the road there was a steady stream of cyclists two or three deep on the cycle paths.

I could almost have had a quick snooze in the middle of the road, but just trying to cross the cycle way was a serious navigational exercise.

It’s difficult to pick the key things that have made cycling culture so strong here (45% of the population commute to their place of work or study according to Wikipedia), but the incredible cycling infrastructure obviously plays a big part. All major routes appear to have segregated cycle paths where bicycles are separated from vehicle traffic and there is no risk of being car doored.

Oh, and there’s no Lycra to be seen! I assume any MAMILs have been killed off by the rest of the population long ago….
