Lava flows and glacial sands

Hiding under the massive glacier of Vatnojokull are a series of still active volcanoes. Although they still erupt regularly (unleashing floods from the sudden glacial melts they trigger), the landscape is dominated by the massive eruptions that occurred over 200 years ago.

These eruptions have left vast plains of lava flows, and mountains of grey ash. The lava flows are seriously weird looking. The rock has formed into twisted and contorted shapes and is now covered in thick soft moss. Its a bit like a massive kids playground (I could have played in it for hours) and you keep expecting aliens or mythical creatures to pop out from the crevices.

The glaciers have worn away at the mountains and have left vast tracks of black and grey glacial sands stretching away over the horizon. Its all rather eerie and makes you feel like you’re on another planet. Certainly like no place we’ve ever seen before!
