Food heaven

A big part of the appeal of Istria has been the food. While we’ve eaten out a few times, the real highlight, given our (relatively) meagre budget,  is the availability of fresh produce. We’ve found produce markets, seafood shops and road side vendors, which have been amazing.

Highlights include:

  • finding that borlotti beans are in season – we’ve never eaten them fresh before and they make an awesome salad!
  • stumbling across a roadside vendor selling bizzare wild mushrooms (see photo below)
  • tasting truffles – the truffle infused marmalade was definitely the most interesting – think a sweet spread with a VERY pungent fungus/mushroom flavour
  • drinking walnut infused grappa while watching the sun go down
  • cooking in apartments for a whole week!

Of course there’s also been some pretty good pastries, but that’s another story altogether……..
