It rains in Denmark too

After meeting up with Toby and Anthony, we had a beautiful first day’s cycling the National Route 1 to Skagen, the most northerly point in Denmark and the spot where the North and Baltic Seas meet.

We tried out another free nature camp that night, although this one wasn’t quite as lovely as the first.

The next day we set off south heading down Denmark’s east coast. After being spoilt by the scenery in Iceland, the 70 kilometres of flat fields and farmland we passed through were a little uninspiring. We stopped for the night in a proper campsite with hot showers and washing facilities, and a large covered area – which we were grateful for when at 7pm that night when, once again it started to rain.  Arrrgghh!!

It was still raining the next morning. The thought of cycling for a few days through similar scenery with pouring rain didn’t have much appeal to any of us, so after a little research we decided to make a beeline for Aalborg and catch a train to Aarhus and have a day off the bikes exploring the city. We covered the 55 odd kms into Aalborg fairly easily, and made it in time to sample some rather nice beers from a brewhouse in the town, before catching the 7pm train.

We hopped off the train to a clear night’s sky, and a city full of activity (people out and about, shops open, packed bars and live music). Not bad for a Tuesday night! Our plan is to spend the next day exploring the city, before taking the ferry to Zealand on Thursday and heading south east to Copenhagen.
