Along the Austrian border

Pasau
Pasau

We’ve just completed the 150 or so kilometres or so from Passau to Salzberg, following the Eurovelo route 7 in Austria. We’ve had a couple of bike issues (torn tyre and a bent dérailleur) which have slowed us down a little but so far the route has been fantastic.

Both Passau and Saltzberg are absolutely stunning, as is Burghausen in between. There is no shortage of eye candy in these places with each having magnificent baroque architecture and large hillside castles. Even the towns in between are really nice, with historic town squares, usually with a good pastry shop to keep us happy.

In between the towns the route follows the Inn and Salzach rivers, and is mainly forested. The paths are notably less maintained, often rougher dirt tracks rather the the smooth tarmac we’ve grown used to. It’s mainly traffic free though.

We’ve also met more long route cycle tourists along this section than we have for a while, and it was particularly nice to swap stories about routes and day to day issues like how we deal with being filthy dirty we are so often! (Alex and Viviana, hope the rest of your trip goes really well).
