One of the really good things about Croatian bakeries is that they have savoury pastries. We’ve been dreaming of a meat pie since Iceland (it’s funny what cycling long distances will do) and up till now there’s been a distinct lack of anything to satisfy our cravings.
Burek comes in three flavours, meat, cheese and cheese and spinach. They are covered in an oily, flaky pastry and are very very good. Perhaps the only problem was they may have increased my pastry intake – luckily the sweet pastries were not exceptional – if I were in France I may not have survived eating Burek on top of my normal pastry intake!
The cheese ones were, surprisingly, my favourite. The good ones are made with a feta-like goat or sheep cheese, and are served in roughly half kilo portions for the princely sum of three Australian dollars. To finish a whole one in a single sitting is a tall ask, and they make the perfect second breakfast (or first lunch).
