It has been fantastic to back in the land of pastries again, after the drought in Iceland. We’ve now had a week Denmark, and I’ve had reasonable chance to sample the local fare. Overall, the pastries are not as good as France and as you can see below, I sampled a couple of monstrosities. However, the simple traditional pastries are lovely – buttery and covered in cinnamon (although surprisingly lacking in fruit).
First off the cab was a small simple Danish swirl – buttery, with a nice amount of cinnamon mixed through, but nothing to write home about yet….

Luxosnitte – I was getting desperate for a good pastry at this stage so thought I’d give this one a try. It was much better and less sweet than it looks. Short crust pastry with jam, and a marzipan topping. Three and a half stars.

Noddehorn – from a supermarket, but surprisingly good. A slightly crunchy almond meal creation sitting on a chocolate base. Three and a half stars.

A traditional Danish pastry – basically a cinnamon swirl, not too sweet, light and buttery. Four stars!

Kokostoppe – sweet coconut goodness with dark chocolate to top it off. It was reminiscent of a cherry ripe, had a nice slightly crunchy outer layer and smelt like heaven! Four stars.

Fruit tart from the St Franske Conditori bakery in Copenhagen. Crispy almond meal on the outside, an almost savoury custard on the inside and fruit with a hint of caramelisation on the top. It smelt as good as it looks! Four and a half stars.

Chokoladeboller – Like a pain au chocolate, but with icing….. 😦

Kartoffelkage – this one is named after the potato it resembles. A marzipan coating filled with cream and custard and a wafer thin sponge to hold it all together. An amazing creation but too sweet for me. Three stars.
