Icelandic pastries

Dear readers, apologies for the long break in the pastry blog. Although Iceland is incredibly beautiful, it doesn’t have a lot in the way of pastries, and my hunt for blog-worthy pastries invariably ended in bitter disappointment.

We heard rumour of a pastry shop via a handed down flyer  while in the South of Iceland and after a slog through the wind and rain we did indeed find one in Raydourfjoudour. As you can see the cabinet was full of promise, with a nice looking selection of potential delicacies.

We parted with our hard earned cash, full of anticipation, waiting for some sugary, creamy goodness…..the result was ….well….underwhelming….maybe France set too high a standard, but mine was only barely edible. A crispy light pastry, promised something after the first mouthful, but soon became a stick to the top of your mouth baddie. Two stars.

The best thing we found was these doughnut like things in the supermarkets. They have almond meal inside and are chocolate coated, and go very well with a morning coffee (we ate a lot of these). Three and a half stars.
